Update

Well, after a surprisingly uneventful week 10, aka "dead week," I am home again for another weekend before going back down to Eugene for finals week and then back home for spring break. I say uneventful because compared to some of my friends, I had it pretty easy -- many of my fellow journalism premajors just finished the long, painstaking, depression-inducing process that is J202 Information Gathering (aka "Info Hell" -- why does everything having to do with UO have such depressing nicknames anyway?) and one of them even wrote a lengthy Facebook note about his experience redoing a significant portion of his project the night before the project was due because his jump drive corrupted.*

*Reading about this incident makes me feel a little more worried. During my Info Hell experience, I barely backed up anything. Mostly because my computer was already filled nearly to capacity with more important things, such as an entire folder full of pictures of my ex. Who, by the way, is a jerk. I couldn't get this far without pointing that out again. Why waste an opportunity?

Sooooooo...I didn't have info hell this term -- I had already dealt with that during fall term at the same time I was soaking through multiple layers of clothing during marching band season in stereotypical Oregon weather. My dead week consisted of:

  • Monday: Lamenting the facts that my friends had left for their various homes in Newberg and Boise and that I had to return to my normal, depressing life; finding out that both my J 101 and Spanish classes had been canceled AFTER going to class and (in the first case) being told by another teacher that an email had been sent out alerting us to the cancellation of class and (in the second case) going to class with everyone and sitting there for 20 minutes before we realized the teacher wasn't coming to class -- the day before our final test; cooking enough Rice-A-Roni for two meals and then boiling water for a cup-o-noodles because I didn't feel like washing a plastic storage container that night; spending forever trying to print and make copies with the ultimate goal of creating an eight-page, double-sided booklet; setting out on the downward spiral to my addiction to Pet Society on Facebook.
  • Tuesday: Penultimate J 204 vis comm lecture; turned in my project; listened to the stupid loudmouth behind me comment on everything said the entire lecture; went home; went to Spanish; took the test, this time remembering all the test-taking tips I had learned from previous tests (basically: it doesn't really matter WHAT you write as long as it remotely pertains to the question, is grammatically correct and fills all available lines -- this is where writing huge and B.S.-ing come in handy); stayed in the rest of the night with some more Pet Society.
  • Wednesday: Penultimate J 101 grammar lecture; copyediting exercise in class (yay!); NO SPANISH because of the oral exams, so I stayed in and hung out on -- you guessed it -- Facebook.
  • Thursday: Final test in J 204, but first we reviewed the three GTFs for the class -- wait, there were three? They weren't really active in the class other than grading papers...oh except there was that one who was a bitch to me and wrote rude comments on my project. Well then, let's see what all I can do to ensure that people think twice before recommending her for anything...; went back to my apartment and hung out in the living room while I waited for Veronica, my partner for the Spanish oral exam, to call; Veronica calls several times throughout the afternoon to tell me that she still wasn't done with the questions and should we just meet tomorrow? I said yes and arranged to meet her as soon as I got out of my class; called Claire to arrange my transportation to Newberg for the next day; spent the rest of the night on Facebook.
  • Friday: Final J 101 lecture before the final -- we got cookies! We also went over the stuff from the previous test to help us out on the final. She also gave us insider info on Monday's test...; after class, I met up with Veronica in the Fishbowl to go over Spanish stuff for a couple of hours; we walked over to the library and waited a little while; it's 2:10 p.m. and he just now showed up...there's one group ahead of us...Claire will most definitely be wondering where I am...I had counted on being out of the library by 2:20. Doesn't look like that will happen; managed to get through the oral exam somewhat intact despite stumbling through the "surprise question" at the beginning; also found out my score for the third exam -- 83! Man, Sebastian was feeling generous!; ran out of the library the second I was free, calling Claire on the way out; got home and dragged four bags out of my apartment and into Claire's waiting van; hit the road back to Newberg.
Compared to this week, finals week should be a breeze. Only one test and it's on Monday. Woohoo.

THE BEST WEEKEND EVER!!!

FRIDAY:
My friends Bess and Andrew left Boise early Friday morning and got into Eugene in the middle of the afternoon. While Andrew slept -- he had gotten very little sleep the night before -- Claire and Bess went to Valley River Center to do some necessary shopping, and I met them there at about 5 p.m. After the mall trip, Claire had some homework to do, so Bess, Andrew, our other friend Melissa and I hung out for a little while at my apartment. After a quick dinner of pizza from Little Caesar's, Claire met us at my apartment and we went ballroom dancing at Gerlinger Hall on campus, hosted by the Oregon Ballroom Dance Club. After a couple of hours of dancing, we went back to my apartment to drop off Bess, who was pretty tired after a long day. Andrew, Melissa and I went to Common Grounds (in Hamilton Complex) for karaoke night.

SATURDAY:
Andrew and Melissa hung out with some other friends during the morning. Bess and I met Claire at her car and we went to David's Bridal, where Bess tried on a bunch of formal dresses (she's one of Claire's bridesmaids.) On the way back to my apartment, we stopped by Albertson's to do some grocery shopping. At about that time, we got a call from Brian saying he was on his way. We ended up surprising Brian at my apartment by distracting him with a Youtube video and Bess came up behind him. Then we went to Shari's for dinner, and Andrew and Melissa met us at Onsen Spas near campus for some hot tubbing.

No, this isn't where we went hot tubbing. And no, it's not mine either (sadly).

Together at last!

SUNDAY:
We had planned to meet for breakfast at 10:30 a.m., but we didn't wake up until then -- none of us had remembered to reset clocks for daylight savings time. We ended up meeting at Carson (buffet in the dorms) for brunch with our friends Adam and Christina. Shortly after breakfast, Andrew and Bess had to leave because they were facing a long drive back to Boise with snow along the way. Brian stayed until about 6:45 p.m., and during that time we scouted out apartment possibilities.*

*Note: Sunday afternoon is not the best time to go apartment shopping if you actually intend to speak to someone. Or, for that matter, if you plan on stopping by State Farm to get a free map.

After a few hours, we went back to my apartment for some ice cream and hanging out, and then Brian had to get on the road back to Newberg and Claire had to go to work. It was way too short, but what a weekend.

ugggghhhhhhhh

Today is another blah day. I originally set my alarm for 9:30 a.m. and ended up sleeping until 10:20, and still felt like I was going to die when I got up. Well, not really, but close. I definitely wasn't feeling good.

And it's unexplainable. I got eight hours of sleep last night, and 12 hours each of the two nights before that. But all the sleep in the world didn't seem like it would be enough to get me through today. However, I still had to go to class anyway, so I made the 10-minute walk, stomach on the edge of exploding any second.

Sigh. I really hope this doesn't last. My friends are visiting this weekend and I definitely don't want to spend the entire weekend sleeping...

See you later Mountain Dew...

Another Mardi Gras has come and passed, and we are now beginning the 40-day season of Lent. I have never participated intensely in this custom, and during high school I always thought of Lent as something "other people" did. But with the amount of self-discovery I've been doing during the past month, as well as the too-perfect timing of the fact that I am currently out of Mountain Dew, I have decided that I will be giving up Mountain Dew and energy drinks (not as big of a problem, although I do indulge in an Amp now and then) for the duration of Lent.

It's a significant sacrifice: I usually drink at least one can of Dew every day, often more. But I feel like the break will give me time to focus on more important things, allow for more self-discovery and improve the strained relationships I currently have with my friends. Hopefully I can come out of this a better person.

I know that the purpose of fasting is not to make a huge deal about it -- in fact, we are commanded to not "make it obvious" (Matthew 6:16) but I really felt like I needed to tell people, otherwise they wouldn't believe me. I also wanted people to know because I am in continual need of support as I work toward changing my life for the better. Any positive thoughts or prayer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Holy cow Billie Joe Armstrong's short...and should NOT be blonde...

Normally, I don't bother watching awards shows on TV because they're way over-hyped and feature the usual expected nominees. But Hailey decided to watch the Grammys, which meant I also watched the Grammys. Following are some of the best (and worst) parts of the show in my opinion.

The Best:

  • The montage of all of the behind-the-scenes people who made music great, as well as some of those stars. Everyone from the music arranger for The Beatles to the composer of the theme for "The Andy Griffith Show" to the lead singer of the Four Tops to Bo Diddley was featured. Overall, a nice little tribute to pop music's early days.
  • Coldplay walked away with a couple of awards (Song of the Year, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals) for their song "Viva La Vida" as well as Best Rock Album for "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends." Yay.
  • Radiohead performed "15 Step" from their album "In Rainbows" (for which they won an award) accompanied by the USC drumline and brass section from the marching band. One of two songs the band knows how to play.
The Worst:
  • Katy Perry's performance of "I Kissed A Girl" was terrible. On the radio, Perry's voice sounds sassy and fits the tone of the song. Onstage, her voice sounded like it belonged in a metal band and clashed with the bright colors and fruit in the background.
  • The Jonas Brothers collaborating with Stevie Wonder on a medley. The presence of Stevie Wonder on the stage was possibly the only redeeming quality of that entire three minutes.
  • The "rap showcase" performing an extended version of "Swagga Like Us." The showace featured Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil' Wayne, T.I., Tip and M.I.A. The latter was extremely pregnant and was actually due the night of the awards.
  • Al Gore won "Best Spoken Word Album" with "An Inconvenient Truth," read by Beau Bridges, Cynthia Nixon and Blair Underwood. Among those beat out by Gore were Steve Martin with "Born Standing Up" and Stephen Colbert's audiobook for "I Am America (And So Can You)," which included the voice talents of Colbert, Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello, Jon Stewart, Evelyn McGee and others. You can bet America Himself will have something to say about this on his show tomorrow...perhaps another read-off, this time with Gore, is in the future?
So yeah. That was pretty much the 2009 Grammy Awards. Nothing too surprising.

Elphaba, why couldn't you have stayed calm for once, instead of flying off the handle?

GLINDA:
(sung) I hope you're happy!
I hope you're happy now
I hope you're happy how you
Hurt your cause forever
I hope you think you're clever!

ELPHABA:
I hope you're happy
I hope you're happy, too
I hope you're proud how you
Would grovel in submission
To feed your own ambition

BOTH:
So though I can't imagine how
I hope you're happy right now

GLINDA:
(spoken) Elphie, listen to me. Just say you're sorry:
(sung) You can still be with the Wizard
What you've worked and waited for
You can have all you ever wanted:

ELPHABA:
(spoken) I know:
(sung) But I don't want it -
No - I can't want it
Anymore:

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

It's time to try
Defying gravity
I think I'll try
Defying gravity
And you can't pull me down!

GLINDA:
Can't I make you understand?
You're having delusions of grandeur:

ELPHABA:
I'm through accepting limits
''cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know!
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
Well, if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost!
I'd sooner buy
Defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye
I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down:
(spoken) Glinda - come with me. Think of what we could
do: together.

(sung) Unlimited
Together we're unlimited
Together we'll be the greatest team
There's ever been
Glinda -
Dreams, the way we planned 'em

GLINDA:
If we work in tandem:

BOTH:
There's no fight we cannot win
Just you and I
Defying gravity
With you and I
Defying gravity

ELPHABA:
They'll never bring us down!
(spoken) Well? Are you coming?

GLINDA:
I hope you're happy
Now that you're choosing this

ELPHABA:
(spoken) You too
(sung) I hope it brings you bliss

BOTH:
I really hope you get it
And you don't live to regret it
I hope you're happy in the end
I hope you're happy, my friend:

ELPHABA:
So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky!
As someone told me lately:
"Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly!"
And if I'm flying solo
At least I'm flying free
To those who'd ground me
Take a message back from me
Tell them how I am
Defying gravity
I'm flying high
Defying gravity
And soon I'll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No Wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!

GLINDA:
I hope you're happy!

CITIZENS OF OZ:
Look at her, she's wicked!
Get her!

ELPHABA:
Bring me down!

CITIZENS OF OZ:
No one mourns the wicked
So we've got to bring her

ELPHABA:
Ahhh!

CITIZENS OF OZ:
Down!

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Well, it's official.

As of tonight, January 29, 2009, Ashley Flock, Alitia Monasmith, Wally Schimke and Bret Eason are no longer friends with me.
